KIBERA SLUM GIRLS DRAW UP A CODE ON ABUSE

When I Report That I have Been Abused:

Please say you believe me, do not doubt me.
Please do not make promises that you cannot keep
Please tell me that I am not to blame, it was not my fault
Please do not get shocked and disgusted, help me instead
Please do not fight my offender, help me find justice
Please be cautious about whom you hire as my coach or teacher
Please come sometimes to watch me play or visit my school
Please warn my teacher not to touch me every time he passes my my desk
Please do not send me alone to do your errands early morning or late evening
Please remember that man who comes to visit you could also be coming to watch me and my sister(s). We need your interest and protection.
Please ask yourself why I do not like school anymore, and why many girls in my team are pregnant or have babies.
Please ask yourself why so many girls attend STD Clinics and VCT: its not a clubhouse
I want to play football....but it must be for my enjoyment. I want selections to the team to be free and fair. I want to have a safe place to change and use a safe toilet and bathe safely. I want male coaches who are impregnating girls or giving them STDs to be exposed. I want our story to be told because many girls are pregnant, have sex unwillingly, have no rights in their teams, and are suffering from AIDS and HIV because they live in the slums. I want everyone to know that the highest amount of abuse, verbally, physically and sexually takes place on the pitch. I want the government to investigate this, and find solutions. I have played Sisterhood World Cup 2010, where I have listened to very many Kenyans talk about the issues which we have brought up, I have seen and listened to the new constitution of Kenya, and I finally feel that there is a chance for us to be free of exploitation. I want 2011 Sisterhood World Cup to be the year of asking for fair and equitable space for girls in the slums...tupe nafasi, give us chance....

19 MARCH 2011: YOUTH CONFERENCE LEAVES PARTICIPANTS THIRSTING FOR MORE!

The Girl Power Programme and the Boys 2 Men Initiative held an important conference on the 19th March 2011, for 120 leaders from 28 selected schools. This conference, to which 2 media houses were invited, covered the Kenyan Constitution and how the youth can take advantage of it. The event began at 9.30 a.m and ended at 2.30 p.m. Lunch and a refreshment break were offered. The programme for the day was run by former PLDP Programme graduates, trained young men and women for leadership and political office, and some top notch lawyers in the city.

Kenya is at a very unique time in our history, when we are making far-reaching decisions related to our constitution that will decide our future for decades to some. The school-going youth must not be left out, and was a great opportunity for those who attend, to learn about the new Kenya Constitution, why they must protect it, how they can take advantage of it for their future. Teachers, coaches and referees were included in the open conference to ensure that they would be able to get important feelings.

27 MARCH 2011: SISTERHOOD WORLD CUP FINALISTS CURTAIN RAISE FOR INTERNATIONAL MATCH!

Mammoth Crowd At Nyayo Stadium Where Girls Curtain-Raised For Palmeiras-Gor Mahia Match.

On Sunday 27 March 2011, the Embassy of Brazil invited the girls participate in an exhibition match between Brazilian top team, Palmeiras FC, and Kenya’s 2010 national league finalist, Gor Mahia FC, at the Nyayo National Stadium. This was a 30 minute match that was a curtain-raiser for the main game, and provided us with the opportunity to showcase our girls playing football at a high standard, as well as giving the message about providing girls with the opportunity to get an education and play sport without undue harassment both physically and verbally. The girls were cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd of Gor Mahia Fans, estimated to be about 11,000 strong, which encouraged them to display good quality football.  The match was televised to about 30 million Kenyans, through Nation, Citizen, KTN, K24 and KISS TV. The activity ended with awards for Sadili Queens (winner) and God’s Last Appeal (Runner-up) and Sunderland (2nd runnerup).

26 FEB TO 19 MARCH 2011: SISTERHOOD BEGINS ON A HIGH NOTE

Our first 2011 Girls League took place in February and March in partnership with the Brazil Kenya Football League, opening a new platform for the Sisterhood World Cup to a wider community. The league focused mainly on girls from within Kibera and took place at Sadili Sports for Life grounds in Kibera, taking the football and workshops in HIV Awareness right into the community. New sports messaging techniques were employed by our women youth leaders, which was open to all the 144 players from 8 teams and 312 attending spectators who had 63% men and boys! We used this as a special opportunity to talk about sexual practices at an early age, STDs and their effect on fertility in Kibera. Radio Jambo, Kenya’s number one radio station, was on hand throughout the period to interview girls to give personal stories and also provide the public with “blow by blow” accounts of the matches. Opportunities for question and answer sessions were also provided through the station. The preliminaries, semis and finals therefore had a direct impact on more than 2 million Kenyans who were able to listen and 18 had the opportunity chat directly and ask questions during the shows. 12 girls, 2 female organisers, 1 male coach and 2 female coaches were interviewed. By the way, two female coaches out of 12? Wazzup with that? Why men men and men......something to think about!
