CURTAINS DRAWN ON SISTERHOOD WORLD CUP 2010 UNDER 18 LEG

SISTERHOOD WORLD CUP 2010.
UNDER 18 LEG
9TH OCTOBER 2010

QUARTER FINALS

Celtic 1 shooting stars 3
Last week’s rivalry bore fruit as the pretenders and contenders were spread for all to see. Shooting stars full of fire and energy lived to their billing when they faced the imports from Kenya’s Western and Nyanza Province who study at Olympic High School. Strength and endurance did not come to Celtic’s rescue and Joyce Waote’s spot kick went wide prompting the Shooting Stars bench rising up in victory

Zelyn 0 Future Talent 2
It was a surprise when Zelyn entered the quarter finals but it was equally not surprising when they were bundled out of the tournament by an experienced force comprising Fauzia Kaunjeri and Scovia Amiru, the two goal scorers. Hats off to Zelyn for getting this far.

Pumwani 0 Challengers 2
Arriving late to the venue must have been their excuse for losing this match but Challengers could not hold back after seeing their sisters Celtic being humiliated by Shooting Stars. Two quick goals by the Challengers posed a huge challenge to the excuse filled Pumwani team. And hope returned to coach Orao’s spirit evidenced by his witty smile at the final whistle.

Hamlets 0 Sadili Sisters 1
The acrobats as they are usually called in the Kibera soccer circles could not flex further and the perfect balance they so needed was lost in thin air. Playing all the 15 minutes under a pressurized atmosphere full of vuvuzelas and cheers drove both teams away from the concentration zone. The post match penalties also exhibited a tense feeling as only one of the six penalty shots was scored by an experienced Florence Mary Achieng. Question? Is the vuvuzela to blame?

SEMI FINALS

Shooting Stars 1 Challengers 0

He predicted that he would lose. He saw it coming and that is simply what happened. ‘When you stand against a bitter rival you retreat in a decent way’  those were Coach Joseph Orao’s words when he saw Zainab Khamis dribble ball past his two defenders and slamming it into the back of the net. One nil is a decent loss, right?

Sadili Sisters 0 Future Talent 1

Quarter final beauties Sadili Sisters arrived in the flashiest of linen and when they changed into their semi final jerseys one would mistake them for the female version of the high flying Sofapaka. Future Talent seemed to brush these aside. The usual queen pin Fauzia Kaunjeri killed the game in the 6th minute sending the Sadili Sisters to a desperate goal rush. Desperate efforts by Coach Kennedy Kariuki seemed to change the game in the second half but time was not on the hosts’ side. A semi final appearance was a huge improvement for the hosts.

FINALS

Shooting Stars 2 Future Talent 0

Kibera came back to rule the Nairobi soccer scene and locked out Eastlands. Gerishom Ngaywa’s Kaunjeri could not match Zainab*commando*  Khamis and Nelly Auma’s strikes in a duel that soon gained a new name, Mchuano wa mitaa, Battle of the Hoods. The two players who have played alongside each other for as long as 6 years were in sync and gelled in a style no one could comprehend. Whenever Future Talent regrouped to launch an attack, the two would read each and every move, quickly intercepting it. Shooting stars’ Coach Bob had his technique of locking out Future Talent from possession working. And it was not black magic but soccer at its best as the defending champions lost on this all important Under 18 leg. A fiery final indeed.
