CURTAINS CLOSE ON U16 TOURNAMENT WITH FUTURE TALENT WIN

QUARTER FINALS
Celtic 3 Future Talent 4
Armed with an arsenal of the best upcoming players in Kibera could not break the Eastlands jinx. Future talent’s Kaunjeri saw the net after Beham Kabalika of Celtic had silenced the Eastlands’ technical bench. Post match penalties could have helped in Celtic’s way to the semis but lady luck stood on Future Talent’s side.
Pumwani 5 Girls Soccer 4
Surprises filled the game. Nelly Auma threw caution to the air when her shot found the back of the net in the first half, only for Mercy John to equalize in the second half, bringing Pumwani back into the contest.  Pumwani must have trained and perfected their spot kicking techniques, scoring all their spot kicks leaving Girls Soccer with nothing but a well deserved send off at the last eight.

Shooting Stars 0 Baba Dogo 1
Passing the ball in excess must have cost Shooting stars. Creating the one and only chance and converting it to a goal must have been Baba Dogo’s success and eventual happiness. Ann Nduku still stands out from the crowd, emerging from a tight position to score the only goal of the tension filled tie.

Challengers 4 Shofco 3
Pre match threats from Coach Kennedy of Shofco would not deter coach Orao’s spirits. Ricochet after ricochet of shots pounded either goal post in a tie that could only be likened to the clash of the titans. Failure to convert the only created chances could later send the teams to post match penalties and Fatuma GotaGota of Challengers had her star shine. Scoring the winning penalty for challengers was a bitter sweet feeling for her evidenced by the tears that filled her brown eyes.

SEMI FINALS
Future Talent 3 Baba Dogo 2
They say hit the rod when still hot and Future Talent did just that. Maurine Anyango would have killed the game and sent Future Talent to the bins but her faltering at the edge of the area gave fruit to her team’s disappointment at the post match penalties. Mwana Idi’s two successful penalties and Fauzia Njoki’s one assured Future Talent a slot in the finals. Millicent Atieno’s lost penalty could have her blamed by her coach but her defending skills are to boast about.

Pumwani 0 Challengers 1
An improved Challengers f.c proved their worth in the Kibera soccer circles by finally breaking the Eastlands jinx. Teams from Eastlands have always been a force to reckon with but somehow Challengers made it known that teams from Kibera are a rare kind. Catherine Awino not only scored but also guaranteed her team’s win by coming back to defend a close goal scoring opportunity created by Fauzia Kaunjeri of Pumwani.

FINALS
Future Talent 3 Challengers 0
Was the talkative Future Talent coach; Gerishom Ngaywa, the sudden change of weather or the ball size to blame? Challenger’s coach, Joseph Orao could not answer these questions. A surprise shot by Scovia Amiru started the attack. Mwana Idi Njoki’s goal sent the crowd on fire. Fine interplay and insight between Mbeki Mbinya and Beth Nduta resulted in a through pass that put Scovia Amiru in the best of scoring positions. She did not falter and securely placed the ball behind a rather dejected Zubeda Shanga. Future Talent finished in style.

LIFE SKILLS TEACHING
Willy Mwangi and Makokha of Liverpool vct were at hand to provide the girls with factual information on HIV/AIDS and Gender equality. It is important to note that majority of the girls who played in the sisterhood world cup come from disadvantaged communities and a workshop that focuses on improving their well being was a worthy cause. More than 500 girls received information on how to deal with rape cases, physical abuse and prevention from not only HIV/AIDS but also Tuberculosis and malaria. We believe empowering the girls is important for a better society and the sisterhood world cup did more than that.
